Here are some important details about joining the team.
Give this a good read & submit the form below if you want to come ride with us!
What are your team values, vision & mission?
We are glad you asked! FUN, INCLUSIVITY, EQUITY, RESPECT, & COMMUNITY. These are not just words but as in NICA, it guides what we do as team Southwind.
We see a future where EVERY YOUTH IS EMPOWERED TO BE PART OF A THRIVING AND ENGAGED CYCLING COMMUNITY, so we work to BUILD STRONG MINDS, BODIES, CHARACTER, AND COMMUNITIES THROUGH CYCLING.
What area of the State are you in?
We focus on riders in the Wichta composite region gladly including riders from places around Wichita including Newton, Kechi, Sedgwick, Goddard, Derby, Andover, Rose Hill, Augusta, and Arkansas City, just to name a few.
But, if we are too far away, there are also great teams all across the state to check out!
Where and when do you practice?
We practice at multiple locations including Santa Fe lake, Air Capital Park trail and on private land.
Practices start on Sundays at 1:30 in Late January and continue weekly until after Daylight savings time gives us back some more light. After that, we practice twice a week on Tuesday & Thursdays at 5:30pm.
Where and when do you Race NICA?
NICA racing all begins in April and runs though the end of May with the five-race schedule from the state league. Most race venues are 2-2.5 hour drives from the Wichta area with Race weekends running Saturday-Sunday and all the racing happening on Sunday.
Do I need to stay all weekend for my rider to race a NICA event?
We want your rider to have the full experience but you need to make it work for you and your rider even if that means coming up for the mandatory pre-ride early (7:30AM) on Sunday and leaving after their race is done (you don’t have to stay for the 🏆🏅 podium ceremony but it is a lot of fun!).
Who coaches the riders?
All coaches participate and are licensed in the NICA coach licensing program and are background checked and trained in: child abuse prevention, NICA philosophy, concussion recognition, and other crucial topics. There are three levels of coach licensing and each level builds on the next.
Are there off-season events?
Yes! There are tons of other events in the off-season that we try to keep the team informed of and we occasionally go to them with the team.
What does it cost?
For the NICA season the state and national cost is $350. In the first two years of the KS league Southwind has by the generosity of its sponsors not charged a team fee.
Other costs include your rider’s bike, helmet, gear and travel costs for event weekends.
All that can add up, but we don’t want to let that stop your rider from getting engaged so if there is a need, please let a coach know!
If you got this far, contact us & a coach will call you to discuss your rider & any other questions!
(Don’t worry, you won’t always have to contact us via webforms; team communications for registered riders and their families are via a private team messaging app where we keep you informed of all the things!)
